Music

“Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth; Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises.”

Psalm 98:4

 Music Intent

At our school, we believe that music is a powerful and universal language that inspires creativity, builds confidence, and nurtures a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Our intent is to provide every child with high-quality musical experiences that develop their musical understanding, imagination, and enjoyment. Through a sequenced and engaging curriculum, delivered using the Charanga Musical School scheme, pupils progressively develop their listening, performing, improvising, and composing skills.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Experience a broad and balanced music curriculum grounded in practical music-making.

  • Develop musical knowledge and vocabulary that enables them to express ideas with accuracy and confidence.

  • Enjoy opportunities to sing, play instruments, create music, and perform.

  • Build resilience, teamwork, and concentration through collaborative music-making.

  • Appreciate music from a wide range of cultures, traditions, and historical periods.

  • Grow as reflective, creative learners who can evaluate their own work and the work of others.

Ultimately, our music curriculum aims to foster a love of music and the arts, enabling all children to recognise their own musical potential.

Guiding Principles

1. Practical, Active Learning

Children learn best through doing. Charanga provides hands-on music-making where pupils sing, play instruments, move to music, improvise, and compose.

2. Inclusive and Ambitious

Every child is a musician. Lessons are accessible to all pupils, with opportunities for challenge, creativity, and progression from EYFS to Year 6.

3. Progressive, Structured Learning

Carefully sequenced units ensure that musical skills and knowledge build over time, following Charanga’s spiral curriculum approach.

4. High-Quality, Engaging Resources

Charanga’s modern digital resources, songs, instrument tutorials, and performance tracks empower teachers to deliver consistent and engaging lessons.

5. Cultural and Historical Breadth

Children experience music from diverse cultures, styles, and eras, helping them develop curiosity, respect, and understanding of the wider world.

6. Performance and Celebration

Performance is central to musical development. Pupils are encouraged to share their learning through assemblies, liturgies, classroom performances, and school events.

7. Creativity and Expression

Music provides a unique space for children to experiment, take risks, and communicate feelings. Improvisation and composition are core elements of lessons.

8. Wellbeing and Enjoyment

Music supports emotional wellbeing, confidence, and classroom community. Above all, our lessons are joyful, uplifting, and fun.

Extra curricula clubs - School Choir

Our Year 4 pupils and school choir are excited to be taking part in Young Voices once again this year. This will be our third year attending the incredible arena concert, where thousands of children from across the country come together to create the world’s largest school choir. The experience helps our pupils develop confidence, teamwork, and a real love of music. You can find out more about the event on the Young Voices website.
