Religious Education Curriculum
With Christ as our Light, We learn, Love and Shine, with Excellence.
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”
Romans 15:4
Religious Education Vision
“In our school, we guide children to become living examples of Christ’s love, compassion, and hope in the world.”
Religious Education Curriculum Intent
At Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Primary School, Religious Education lies at the heart of everything we do. We participate fully in the Church’s universal mission to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, ensuring that our children are nurtured in faith, knowledge, and understanding as they grow in their relationship with God.
Following the Religious Education Directory (RED) from Nursery to Year 4 and Come and See in Years 5 and 6—both recommended by the Archdiocese of Liverpool—our curriculum is carefully designed to form religiously literate and engaged young people. Pupils are encouraged to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills appropriate to their age and ability, enabling them to reflect spiritually, think ethically and theologically, and recognise the demands of religious commitment in their daily lives (RED 2023).
We follow a clearly structured curriculum roadmap and lesson roadmap to ensure a coherent and progressive learning journey for all pupils. This sequence enables every child to build meaningfully on prior learning, encounter key concepts in depth, and make purposeful connections across units. Our approach to precision teaching ensures that learning is responsive to pupils’ individual needs, so that each child is supported and challenged to reach their full potential.
Our teachers plan lessons that embody Catholicity, weaving the values of the Gospel and the richness of the Catholic tradition into every learning experience. Through the Scriptures, children are invited to encounter Christ, reflect deeply on His teaching, and respond creatively in ways that inspire both personal faith and collective worship. Lessons are age- and stage-appropriate, designed to support pupils’ oracy, reasoning, and creativity, while providing opportunities to grow spiritually and personally.
By engaging with stories of faith, prayer, Catholic teaching, and the wider Christian tradition, pupils not only learn about the Catholic religion but also grow within it. Our Religious Education curriculum seeks to form the whole child—head, heart, and hands—helping them to live out their faith with joy, compassion, and hope.

Other Religions
Children today live in a fast-changing global world, where communication and travel opens them to diversity and challenge. It is important that we prepare them for this. Jesus, who is the fullness of God's revelation to humanity, showed respect for those within and outside his own faith community. The Church calls us to be committed to respecting people of other religions and to recognise that God is at work with them. Every year all children will look at Judaism. Early Years and Key Stage One will also study Hinduism while Key Stage Two will study Islam.

The Benefits of Roadmaps in Religious Education
Implementing clear roadmaps in Religious Education provides pupils with a structured and consistent learning journey. A roadmap outlines our approach, ensuring that every child understands the process and expectations at each stage. This approach promotes equity by enabling all learners to access a meaningful and coherent curriculum, regardless of their starting point. Consistency across lessons helps reinforce key concepts, while a transparent structure supports teachers in delivering content with confidence and clarity. Ultimately, roadmaps create a shared vision for learning, fostering engagement and deeper understanding for all pupils.

Celebrating Children’s Work in Religious Education
At Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Primary School, our Religious Education curriculum provides every child with opportunities to explore, understand, and live out their faith in meaningful ways. The children’s work in R.E. reflects their spiritual curiosity, deep thinking, and growing relationship with God.
Through scripture study, reflection, art, drama, writing, and discussion, pupils are encouraged to make connections between their faith and everyday life. Their work demonstrates a developing understanding of the teachings of Jesus, the sacraments, and the mission of the Church, while showing how Gospel values can be lived out through kindness, compassion, and service to others.
Children take great pride in their R.E. learning, which is beautifully displayed across classrooms and shared in school liturgies, assemblies, and celebrations. These pieces of work are not only academic achievements but also expressions of faith, showing how each child is growing in knowledge, love, and discipleship.
Our R.E. curriculum helps pupils recognise that they are part of a faith-filled community, called to live as followers of Christ — learning to know Him, love Him, and serve Him in all they do.
We invite you to take a look at examples of the children’s work across different year groups as a celebration of their effort, creativity, and faith journey. Each piece is a testament to how our pupils express their understanding of God’s love and their role as young disciples in the world today. Understand, and live out their faith in meaningful ways. Progression and Assessment: Ways of Knowing
How We Assess Learning in Religious Education
Throughout each topic, pupils are assessed using our “Ways of Knowing” (RED) and Standard indicators (Come and See) framework. This approach encourages ongoing reflection and understanding. At the end of each branch, pupils review what they have learned, explore the scripture they have studied and consider how they can live out these teachings in their daily lives.
Our Insight Data platform organises these “Ways of Knowing” and Standard Indictors into branches/topics. This allows us to monitor progress continuously. This data helps us identify pupils who may need additional support, ensuring that every child can access a meaningful and consistent Religious Education curriculum.
We also provide appropriate challenge for all learners, encouraging them to think deeply, make connections and apply their understanding in real-life contexts. This ensures that pupils are not only supported but also stretched to reach their full potential.
