Year 3 Autumn 2025

Year 3 Curriculum Overview

In Year 3, children build confidence, independence and curiosity as learners. They deepen their understanding across subjects while developing key skills such as reading fluency, problem solving, teamwork and creativity.

Religious Education

The autumn term, children follow the RED Curriculum, beginning with Branch 1: Creation and Covenant, where they learn about God as Creator and the special relationship He has with His people.

They then move on to Branch 2: Prophecy and Promise, exploring how God speaks through prophets and makes promises of hope.

Through these branches, children deepen their understanding of God’s love, their place in the world, and the importance of relationships, community and responsibility, while growing in respect, understanding and compassion for others.

English

In English, the children will enjoy a wide range of exciting texts including The Tin Forest and Aesop's Fables.  This will help them to develop their reading comprehension and ability to write for different purposes. Poetry, myths and traditional tales are used to inspire creativity and strong vocabulary choices.

Mathematics

Mathematics in the autumn term focuses on building strong number foundations. Children develop number sense, place value understanding and addition and subtraction strategies. They also begin work on multiplication and division, using practical resources and problem-solving activities to explain their thinking.  They will also explore graphs, and how to measure using a ruler and how to find the perimeter of a 2D shape.

Science

Science lessons introduce children to rocks and animals including humans. They learn how rocks are formed and used, and explore nutrition, skeletons and muscles. Children develop scientific enquiry skills by observing, comparing and recording their findings.

Geography

In geography, children learn about rivers and mountains. They explore how rivers shape the land, key physical features and how mountains are formed. Map skills and geographical vocabulary are developed throughout the unit.

History

History lessons focus on Ancient Egypt and the Cradles of Civilisations. Children learn about Egyptian life, beliefs, achievements and important figures. They explore artefacts, timelines and sources to understand how this early civilisation shaped the past.

Art & Design

Children develop drawing skills through gestural charcoal work, experimenting with movement, line and expression. They also explore shape and colour through collage, responding to artworks and developing confidence in their creative choices.

Design & Technology

In DT, children design and make pneumatic toys. They learn how air can be used to create movement and are introduced to technical drawings such as thumbnail sketches and exploded diagrams. The project develops problem-solving and evaluation skills.

Computing

Computing focuses on understanding how computers connect to form networks. Children also create stop-frame animations and begin learning how to program events and actions, developing early coding and digital creativity skills.

Physical Education

PE lessons include invasion games and gymnastics. Children develop coordination, balance and teamwork while learning rules, strategies and ways to improve performance.

Music

In music, children sing, listen to and perform a range of songs using Charanga. They learn to play the glockenspiel, explore rhythm and pitch, and work together to create simple musical performances.

Spanish

Children are introduced to Spanish greetings and simple conversation. They learn numbers, days of the week, the alphabet and vocabulary related to family, while also exploring Spanish traditions such as Christmas and Holy Week.

PSHE

PSHE lessons focus on online safety, celebrating achievements, resilience and being part of a community. Children learn how to stay safe online, recognise their strengths and understand the importance of respect and belonging.
