Religious Education – Branch 1: Covenant and Creation

The children will continue to explore God’s plan of love through the story of Abraham and Sarah. They will learn about the covenant God made with Abraham and the importance of the promises He made. Through their learning, the children will explore themes of sacrifice, hope, trust and faith, considering what these values can teach us about their own lives and relationships with others.

English: Sparks Will Fly!

The children will develop their writing skills through exciting and engaging texts, including Wallace and Gromit: Cracking Contraptions and The Firework-Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. They will write explanation texts to describe and instruct others on how their own inventions and contraptions work. Alongside this, they will explore figurative language, including similes and powerful description, before using these techniques in narrative writing through chapter continuations and creative story development.

The children will develop their understanding of place value, building confidence in reading, representing and comparing numbers. They will also learn and apply efficient methods for addition and subtraction, using their skills to solve a range of mathematical problems and reasoning challenges.

Science: Electricity

The children will explore how electricity powers many of the devices and appliances we use every day. They will construct and investigate simple electrical circuits, identifying the different components needed for a circuit to work. The children will also learn about conductors and insulators, carrying out investigations to discover which materials allow electricity to pass through them and which do not.

PSHE: Nutrition and Dental Health

The children will learn about the importance of making healthy choices to look after their bodies. They will explore balanced diets, healthy eating habits and the role different foods play in keeping us well. They will also learn how to care for their teeth, understanding the importance of good dental hygiene and how healthy habits can support their wellbeing throughout life.

Through discussion and reflection, the children will develop their understanding of acceptance, inclusion and kindness, recognising that God’s love is for everyone.

Equality and Diversity

Using carefully selected texts, the children will explore themes of identity, acceptance and challenging stereotypes. They will consider how everyone has the right to be themselves and will learn the importance of respecting differences, showing empathy and ensuring others feel included and valued within our community.

They will learn how websites, networks and connected devices communicate, developing an understanding of how we access information online. The children will also discuss the importance of using the internet safely, responsibly and respectfully.

Geography: The Rhine and the Mediterranean

The children will investigate the River Rhine and the Mediterranean region, developing their understanding of their locations and significance. They will learn how rivers have supported settlements, transport and trade throughout history and explore why waterways remain important today. The children will also use maps to identify key physical and human features of these regions.

History: The Roman Republic

The children will explore the origins of Rome through the legend of Romulus and Remus and learn how Rome developed into a powerful republic. They will investigate the meaning of SPQR and discover the significance of key historical figures such as Hannibal and Scipio. They will also examine the different roles people played within Roman society and consider how these roles contributed to the success of the Republic.

Art and Design

The children will experiment with charcoal to create expressive and atmospheric drawings inspired by Stories. They will explore a range of mark-making techniques, including blending, shading and creating texture, while developing their understanding of line, tone and form. The children will build confidence in using charcoal to communicate movement, mood and detail in their artwork.

Design and Technology

The children will investigate how mechanical systems can be used to create movement. They will explore different mechanisms, analyse existing products and develop their own design ideas. Using their understanding of structures and movement, the children will design, make and evaluate a product, considering both its function and appearance throughout the design process.

Music: Brass Band

The children will take part in weekly brass lessons led by a specialist teacher through Sefton Wider Opportunities. They will learn how to produce sounds using brass instruments, develop their understanding of rhythm and dynamics, and perform simple musical pieces. The children will also build confidence in listening, performing and working together as musicians.

Spanish: Family and Pets

The children will develop their Spanish vocabulary by learning the names of family members and pets. They will practise speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish, building confidence in introducing and describing the people and animals that are important to them.

Handwriting in Year 4

In Year 4, we practice handwriting every day. We spend time learning how to form letters correctly, join our writing neatly and present our work with pride.

All children are encouraged to take their time, use the correct letter formation and always try their best. Regular practice helps develop a fluent, neat handwriting style that will support them throughout their learning.
