Year 6 Autumn 2025
Autumn 1
This Autumn, Year 6 will be diving into an exciting range of topics across the curriculum!
English
We are exploring Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo, which will inspire us to create our narratives by the end of the half-term. Along the way, we’ll develop our reading skills, build rich vocabulary, and practise using powerful descriptive techniques in our writing. We will be focusing on year 6 spelling, punctuation and grammar objectives and revising all previously taught skills.
Maths
In maths, we have been focusing on place value of numbers up to seven digits, making sure we can read, write, compare, and order large numbers with confidence. We are also learning different strategies for addition (including commutativity) and subtraction, with particular emphasis on missing number, and choosing the most efficient method to solve problems.
Science
Our science topic is Animals Including Humans. We will identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function and describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans.
PSHE
This term’s PSHE theme is Drugs and Alcohol Addiction. We will learn about legal and illegal drugs and the effect that smoking, drugs and alcohol has on the body.
P.E.
In P.E., we are developing our teamwork and tactical skills through invasion games such as football, netball, and hockey.
Geography
Our geography question is: Why is California so thirsty? We will investigate the challenges of water supply, climate, and how people adapt to living in such a dry environment.
History
In history, we are travelling back in time to explore The Round City of Baghdad, discovering why it was once one of the most important cities in the world and what made it thrive as a centre of learning and culture.
